64. Sunny Slovenia

This time of year in Ljubljana, it begins to get warmer. The sunshine sends you into the spring season of fun. Thus, my husband and I decided to fly over to Slovenia. From London to Ljubljana, it was a short two hours and 15 minutes thanks to EasyJet.

First off, Ljubljana Castle captivates the eye. It was built in the 11th and rebuilt in the 12th century. It’s the main landmark of the Old Town. The historic heart is Prešernov trg Square where loads of cafes, shops and restaurants reside where one may have the traditional cuisine. Slovenia’s national dish are a popular combination of Kranjska klobasa (carniolan sausage) and Žganci (buckwheat spoonbread). We tried to find these items but were not successful which means we’ll visit again one day. Anyways, museums were up next.

For cultural insights, the National Museum is intriguing. It’s an education destination standing as the oldest cultural institution in the country. The National Gallery gives a look through a massive selection of Slovene art. My favourite was the Moderna Galerija (MG+) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (+MSUM) which displays works of art from the Slovenian 20th century, glimpses of Modernism in the 1900s and current contemporary artists.

Following the art adventures, an afternoon stroll in Tivoli City Park is priceless. There’s something about having nature all around you in the middle of a city. It definitely helps you with a soft fascination which is forever calming. The capital conveys a cosmopolitan vibe. We especially enjoyed the bars: Neks, Kolibiri, Captain’s Cabin as well as SILK and FIZZ.

For accommodation, we stayed at the Tivoli City Inn. It was modern. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was beautifully designed. The decor was chic. The perfect place for a night’s rest away from the noise.

The weekend was spent in Bled. What truly magical place. It felt as though we were in a fairytale. For dining, we had lunch at the Old Cellar Bled. It was a cool atmosphere with delicious dishes. My husband had the I selected the duck and venison. Soon after, it was time for the world famous town dessert, Bled creme cake - Blejska kremšnita.

Later on, walking along Lake Bled was beautiful and peaceful. It was just good to take in things and relax.

After this trip, I would recommend exploring both the city centre and resort town. They both offered something different and special, truly welcoming experiences.
