59. Gracious Greece
Anyone who knows me recognises that I’ve always wanted to visit Greece. I would read about the architecture, cuisine and history through many books. This year, I finally made it. I have to say I’m grateful as it was a wonderful experience. From the moment we landed, the booking.com taxi driver service was quick and efficient. The EU member state with a population over 10M is the birthplace of Western culture. As we headed into the centre of Athens., it was alive! One could feel the city rhythm.
First stop was The Clumsies for an afternoon beverage. It wasn’t too busy and the cocktails were lovely with welcoming staff. Then my husband and I visited an eatery where locals and tourists frequent called Hoocut. Naturally, we were recommended an Alpha or Mamos as the beer to drink along with a true pitta beef or mutton. Fresh pita, grilled meat and something cold to wash it down.
Then two friends surprised us with a text that they were in town. Thus, we met up to say hi. Following that, we went for a stroll in the National Garden. Gorgeous greenery surrounded us.
Soon enough, it was time for the evening entertainment. For cocktails, we enjoyed Brettos and Baba Au Rhum. Both had marvelous music, a cool cocktail selection, whimsical decor and inviting hosts. Then for our meal, we dined at Kalua Athens. The meze, zucchini fries, shrimp saganaki and mixed quiona salad were delicious. The Mediterranean diet is the way. It was a fun atmosphere with serenading sounds and excellent city centre views.
The next day early morning, we took Fast Ferries at 07:30 to Andros. It’s the northernmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago. It was a two hour journey. Smooth sailing really until only the last twenty minutes but otherwise fine. It was a bright sunny day. My husband and I strolled the cobblestones alleys for a coffee. Eventually we found the Museum of Contemporary Art. There was an exhibition on Takis, a Greek self-taught artist who specialised in kinetic sculptures. It was like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Definitely amazed.
For lunch, we stopped by the NOA Andros Yacht Club where my friend is the head chef. It was great to try local delicacies, smell the salt water, take in the view and chill for the afternoon. Andros has a slower pace and relaxing vibe. It was a true escape.
